Meet, Salvatore from Wafer Studio.
With years of experience in the industry, Salvatore has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry today to create gorgeous looking office spaces. With each office spaces having a personality of its own, has been encouraging global teams to put their best foot forward right from the time they step into work. Let’s hear about how he has been doing so, so effortlessly!
Great to have you here Salvatore and thank you for agreeing to do this. Let’s start with telling everyone a little about you – maybe even when we can all wish you a happy birthday?
Salvatore: I was born on the 11th of August 1970 and I work at the Wafer Studio. We’re a company that focuses particularly on business, workspace, retail, entertainment and interior.
Our expertise as a team of designers lies in offering clients high quality, on-time service, by delivering absolutely unique interiors that are aligned with their requests, industry standards and current trends. You can read more about our work, here.
We’ve heard only the best of things about the spaces designed by you guys. When it comes to you, when was it that you realized you wanted to get into interior designing? How did it all begin?
Salvatore: Very soon I discovered to be able to express myself using drawings. It all started around the age of 6 actually. After my early experiences, design became my obsession for the rest of my years during school until I finally decided to study Architecture after high school.
Wow, that’s really early. When you take up a project, what is your approach to doing up or planning the interiors of the space?
Salvatore: My approach is to always start with my client’s needs. Secondly, I also take into account the peculiarities of the place in which the project is located. Every place has his inheritance and its story to be told!
A good project completion is when you’re able to meet the client’s needs and at the same time, it is also able to tell the story of the place (or the brand) that resides there.
We’ve seen that you’ve worked extensively on office interiors. What are the 5 things that you always stick to when planning the interiors there?
Salvatore: The first is to analyze the client’s needs and their way of working in order to help and improve productivity, collaboration and happiness inside the workplace.
The second is to balance the layout with full coverage of support spaces vs. operative working spaces.
The third is to use materials that have an excellent acoustic performance and that can avoid noise propagation.
The fourth would be designing the right lighting system according to the various activities that take place inside the office. The lighting has to be right for every single task!
The last would be the use of colours according to the client’s brand identity (whenever possible). Mixing them up with graphics artworks and contemporary furniture that can also be bespoke for specific support spaces or strategic areas inside the office, is the real trick to designing an office space that inspires employees.
Now that you mention inspiration, do you think office interiors have a direct impact on employee productivity?
Salvatore: Of course, they have. Recent studies proved that productivity is strongly related to the quality of workplaces. That’s why I spend a lot of time understanding the company goals, their team and what they would like to see around them to inspire them to do better work every day.
We agree. What is your opinion on the office space interiors you have seen so far in India?
Salvatore: There is a majority of office spaces that are still designed according to an obsolete technology and way of working. I have also seen some recently designed offices that look quite contemporary and efficient as well.
But in general, I believe, the office spaces do need a bit of change to focus more on creating a positive environment for their employees.
You work on so many projects. From where do you get your inspiration? Are there any other designers that you follow?
Salvatore: Office design is always connected to brand communication. So my inspiration actually starts from the company history, their mission and the values they firmly believe in. There’s always so much to take away from there.
Talking about the designers I follow, I have always appreciated the work done by Gensler so far.
We’ll surely follow Gensler’s work too! For those of us who work from home, what tips would you give for setting up a home office maybe?
Salvatore: First of all, an ergonomic task chair to avoid backbone issues and secondly good internet connectivity. Today, smart working can be everywhere you can sit down comfortably, have an internet connection and of course, good coffee!
Is it your first time in India? What has the experience been so far in working with Indian clients, projects and designers?
Salvatore: Yes, it is my first time and I have to say that my experience with Indian clients has been very exciting since the beginning. Lots of opportunities are coming from different business areas in a fast-paced growing country that I really look forward to working on.
We love having you join us here in India. But what are your thoughts on collaborating with Mansionly?
Salvatore: Mansionly has the unique peculiarity to work as an excellent matchmaking environment for designers and customers, giving customers state of the art projects and giving designers proper visibility and prestige.
From a designer’s point of view, this is the best environment to work in!
We’re so glad to hear that! Can you tell us a little about your projects with Mansionly?
Salvatore: My objective is to bring my collaboration with Mansionly to next steps in the near future. That is, to offer new professional design services (not only for interior design) and permanent resources from my studio to be located in India in order to grow better and together.
Looking forward to it. What is it that you do when you’re not working and taking a break?
Salvatore: I love to spend my spare time with my friends and my family. I also love to travel and discover new cultures and architectures. There’s always so much inspiration to take from it all!
We agree. In fact, we too believe in exploring different cultures and stories for inspiration that never ends!
It was really great talking to you Salvatore. I guess we’re going to let you get back to the amazing work you’re doing.
